Cataract Surgery Co Management Consultation Round Rock TX

What Is Cataract Surgery Co-Management?

Co-management means your optometrist and your cataract surgeon work together as a team. Your surgeon performs the procedure, and our doctors at Round Rock Eyes handle the evaluation work before surgery and the follow-up care afterward. This arrangement is common, safe, and keeps most of your appointments close to home.

We do not perform cataract surgery ourselves. Our role is to make sure you arrive at surgery fully prepared, and that your recovery is carefully monitored for any issues that need attention.

Cataract Surgery Pre Op Evaluation Round Rock TX

Your Pre-Operative Evaluation at Round Rock Eyes

Before surgery, we conduct a thorough pre-op evaluation to give your surgeon the measurements and clinical data needed to plan your procedure. Typical testing includes:

Corneal topography to map the surface of your eye

Pupil dilation and retinal exam to rule out conditions that could affect surgical outcomes

Review of your current glasses or contact lens prescription

A review of your medical history, medications, and any dry eye or corneal conditions that should be addressed before surgery

We submit this data directly to your surgeon so nothing gets missed.

Intraocular Lens IOL Options Cataract Surgery Round Rock TX

Understanding Your IOL Options

An intraocular lens (IOL) is the artificial lens implanted during cataract surgery to replace your clouded natural lens. Your surgeon will discuss which type is right for you, but here is what we can explain at your pre-op visit:

Monofocal IOLs correct vision at one distance (usually distance). Most patients still need reading glasses.

Multifocal IOLs split light across distance and near zones, reducing reading glass dependence for many patients. Some people notice halos or glare in low light.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs provide a continuous range of vision from distance through intermediate, with fewer halos than multifocal designs.

Toric IOLs correct astigmatism at the same time as the cataract.

We will talk through your lifestyle, visual goals, and any corneal findings that influence which lens may work best for you.

Cataract Surgery Post Op Care Round Rock TX

Post-Operative Care: What We Monitor

After your surgeon performs the procedure, you will have a day-1 follow-up with them. You will then return to Round Rock Eyes for your remaining follow-up visits. These appointments are critical—cataract surgery recovery requires close monitoring to detect any early complications and ensure your vision stabilizes as expected.

Day 1 post-op: Typically performed at the surgeon’s office.  Vision check, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, and inspection of the incision sites.

Week 1: Confirm the IOL is centered and stable. Check for early signs of inflammation or elevated IOP.

Month 1: Assess best corrected vision, discuss any remaining prescription needs. Address any reports of glare or halos if a premium IOL was used.

Month 3+: Final prescription assessment. If a toric IOL was placed, we verify rotation has not affected astigmatism correction. Evaluate for posterior capsule opacification (PCO), a clouding of the lens membrane that is easily treated with a quick laser procedure (YAG capsulotomy) if it develops.

Cataract Surgery Recovery Monitoring Round Rock TX

When to Call Us Right Away After Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the safest procedures in medicine, but you should contact us immediately if you experience any of the following during your recovery:

Sudden decrease in vision or loss of vision in the treated eye

Increasing pain, redness, or discharge that worsens after day 1

New flashes of light or a significant increase in floaters (may indicate retinal issues)

Severe light sensitivity beyond what you were told to expect

Do not wait for a scheduled appointment if any of these occur. Call our Round Rock office directly and we will get you seen promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions: Cataract Surgery Co-Management

Do I have a say in which surgeon performs my cataract surgery?

Absolutely. We work with several highly regarded cataract surgeons in the Austin area and can provide a referral, but you are always free to choose your own surgeon. If you already have one you prefer, we are happy to coordinate with that practice.

Will insurance cover my post-op visits with Round Rock Eyes?

Most vision and medical insurance plans cover co-managed post-operative care when billed correctly. We will verify your benefits before your first visit. Premium IOL upgrades (multifocal, EDOF, toric) often involve out-of-pocket costs that are separate from the surgical facility fees.

How soon after surgery do I need to come in for my first follow-up?

Typically one week following your procedure. Your surgeon will confirm the exact timing, and we will have your appointment already scheduled before you leave for surgery.

Can I wear my glasses during recovery?

Your old glasses prescription will likely feel wrong immediately after surgery since your eye's optics have changed. We generally recommend waiting until your vision has fully stabilized, usually 4 to 6 weeks, before updating your glasses prescription.

What is posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and is it serious?

PCO is a very common occurrence after cataract surgery where the thin membrane holding the IOL becomes cloudy. It can cause blurry vision similar to the original cataract. It is easily treated with a quick, painless in-office laser procedure (YAG capsulotomy) that takes only a few minutes. We monitor for this at your follow-up visits.

I live in Cedar Park / Georgetown / Pflugerville. Is Round Rock Eyes convenient for post-op visits?

Yes. Our Round Rock location is centrally located and easily accessible from Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, and the surrounding Austin communities. Many patients specifically choose us for co-management because it keeps their recovery visits close to home.
